The first relevant impact on tourist mentions on Social Media related to the crisis for the Balearic Islands was seen on the 9th February. Mentions stabilise after this first peak until the second peak around the 10th March. From April onwards, related mentions remain low and stable.

In general, the Perception of Security dropped very slightly in comparison to 2019: -2%. The main origin markets show different levels of sensitivity towards the Security Perception during the timeframe studied. France shows the highest drop with regards to this Index since February. Spain and the United Kingdom, despite showing signs of instability, have recovered the values seen at the beginning of February. Germany is the origin market showing the most stable level of confidence with values similar and even above those seen at the beginning of February. 

Evolution of demand towards the Balearic Islands: Flight Searches

Searches carried out between 1st February and 16th April 2020 vs 2019 to visit the Balearic Islands on any future date.

Flight Searches evolution

The evolution of spontaneous demand to travel to the Balearic Islands, based on the number of flight searches, shows a big setback in comparison to 2019 since the beginning of February and even more so from the 9th March onwards. During the analysed timeframe, a 56% drop can be seen, reaching 80% drops on certain given days. However, flight searches show a very slight but consistent recovery pattern from the 17th April onwards.

German market:

In absolute figures, the year-over-year searches evolution shows much lower figures. However, in relative terms, the German market’s intention to travel has increased in comparison to 2019 with a small upturn in the last days of April.

British market:

Throughout the whole timeframe analysed, the British market shows a downward trend in terms of interest to travel to the Balearic Islands. Both in terms of absolute and relative importance of the destination in these searches.

The national market, despite a clear drop in the absolute volume of searches to the Balearic Islands, shows stability in terms of the relative interest to visit the destination.

The schedules for inbound seats for the months of May to July shows a 24% drop (-1.6 million seats) according to the latest schedules update on 28th April 2020. In May, over 59% of seats are lost in comparison to the same month in 2019, whereas June is showing a loss of 7% and July a loss of 0.5%. Per country, the UK and Spain are the markets which suffer the biggest drops in relative terms in comparison to the other main markets.
