We compare the reaction of visitors during the attacks in Paris, Berlin, New York and Barcelona.
Recovery of security perception index (SPI) in Western cities that have been victims of terrorist attacks has accelerated in recent years. Mabrian monitors this and other indexes related to tourism perception, with an advanced tourist behaviour analysis system, using Big Data techniques and Natural Language Processing. The attack that took place in Manhattan (NYC, USA) last October 31st supposed an SPI fall bellow 50 (out of a maximum of 100) in the following days, but in just one week the index had reached the levels prior to the attack.
On August the 18th took place the attack in the Ramblas of Barcelona, which provoked a huge fall of the SPI almost to the lowest point (among the tourists from USA it reached 0) two days after it happened. The previous levels to the attack were not recovered until September.
Something similar happened in Great Britain after the massive run over at the London Bridge on the 3rd of June on that same year: recovery didn´t reach the previous levels until the end of the month. It was agile compared with the attacks produced against a Christmas market in Berlin on the 19th of December 2016. The SPI was 0 for more than a week for travellers coming from United Kingdom and United States, and the global level recovery was not reached until middle February, although North American tourists perception still continued counting downward.
Nothing similar, though, with the fall suffered in Paris after the attacks on November 2015, after which 3 months were necessaries to get back to normal levels. Months later, on March 2016, tourists that visited the French capital perceived again a steep fall on safety, as a consequence of the attacks perpetrated at the airport and the underground in Brussels.
Mabrian is the first tourist intelligence platform that uses Big Data to scan and map the tourist´ perception through the full travel cycle—form the decision-making process until the return home-to understand tourist dynamics from a global point of view, and thus help DMO´s to make decisions with objective assessment elements.
A part from the mentioned SPI, it also conceptualises, collects and analyses other index, like global perception of the touristic product index, hotel perception index or climatic index.
